Ecuador’s capital, Quito, has one of the oldest historic districts in Latin America. The capital was declared World Cultural Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1978. The country is most famous for the captivating Galapagos Islands, nearly 1000 kilometres from the mainland, is considered the melting pot for marine species in the world. Another reason why Ecuador's tourism is rolling is because of the strong prevalence of Incan ruins in the area. The Ingapirca Inca Ruins, as well as Rumicucho, La Tolita and Tomebamba ruins are quite large and impressive to see. The Incas were not the only culture to leave their mark here, there are various ruins relating to the ancient Valdivia culture that settled in the outskirts of the coast.

The third largest city in Ecuador is Cuenca, with its European flavour and colonial ambience. Tourists will have a handful of cobblestone streets, plazas and buildings with old architecture. In 1999, it was also cited as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO. Cuenca is also an intellectual centre dubbed as the ‘Athens of Ecuador’.
